Potency – what’s in a label: Demystifying THC vs. Total THC
May 8, 2024
Understanding the difference between THC and Total THC (and similarly, CBD vs. Total CBD) is essential for consumers navigating cannabis products, especially in Canada, where regulations require Licensed Producers to display both on a label. But what number should you pay attention to? And how does that number relate to the highly potent product within?

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)
THC is the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis responsible for the “high” or euphoric effects commonly associated with use.
- When legal product labels list THC content, that number refers to the amount of THC that is directly present in the product. Think of this number as the ‘Raw’ THC; The amount of THC that is contained in the bud as-is.
- in the example to the right, the THC is 1.90%
Total THC (THC & THCA)
Total THC on the other hand, takes into account THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid).
- THCA converts to THC through a process called decarboxylation, which occurs when cannabis is heated, such as during smoking, vaping, or cooking
- In the example to the right, the Total THC is 27.11%
What about CBD?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is like the yin to THC’s yang. It’s the non-psychoactive cannabinoid that’s been making waves in the wellness world for its potential therapeutic benefits, from soothing anxiety to easing pain and inflammation.
Similar to THC, when you see CBD on a label, it’s telling you the amount of CBD that’s already hanging out in your product.
Just like with Total THC, Total CBD considers both CBD and its precursor, CBDA (cannabidiolic acid). CBDA doesn’t get much attention, but it’s there, quietly waiting to become CBD when exposed to heat or time.
So, there you have it, folks! The difference between THC vs. Total THC (and CBD vs. Total CBD) isn’t as confusing as it seems. Just remember, THC and CBD tell you what’s already there, while Total THC and Total CBD give you the whole story, including what’s waiting to bloom into greatness.
At DEALR, we try to make the information that’s truly important stand out on the label. That’s why on our products, you’ll see the Total THC and Total CBD numbers bolded and font-and-centre. Whenever we can, you’ll also find us listing Total Terpene percentages, and on some labelling, when we can squeeze it in, you’ll find out top three terps and the percentage of each as well. Happy toking, and may your cannabis adventures be filled with clarity and delight!
